Karki Gaun is a quiet village in Nepal tucked away at the base of the Himalayas. In one of the poorest countries of the world where 25 percent live below the poverty line, 5 million are undernourished and amidst a struggling economy and low political stability, life is a challenge. Earthquakes in Nepal are another factor of the country’s instability. In the 2015 magnitude 7.5 earthquake, many lost their homes and ability to earn income and were forced to find otherways to make a living. Under these desperate conditions, women often fall vulnerable to trafficking and abuse.
Our goal is to empower the community of Karki Gaun and support it in rebuilding and creating abetter quality of life by starting with the women of the village. Through the generosity of people like you who have given to Nepal Empowered, conditions in Karki Gaun are improving. Here is what the program is making available:
Rebuilding Karki Gaun
With the purchase of brick making equipment (link to details), the villagers can now manufacture building materials to repair homes damaged by the 2015 earthquake and build new homes and public buildings. We are in the early stages of developing an animal husbandry program that will allow for the women of the village to raise goats for a sustainable source of food.
44.5% of women in, most of them in rural Nepal, are illiterate. Nepal Empowered offers programs focused on teaching basic reading and writing skills to the women of the village. Doing so helps them better engage children in learning and reading. Most importantly, the women are owning their power as with Urmila who struggled with.Because of Nepal Empowered, her life has improved “The Adult Literacy Program has become my soul... I am speechless, I am overwhelmed.”
